PARENT CHILD CENTER PROGRAMS
This program is dedicated to a closer knit family. A child with disabilities brings stress to parents
and siblings. By helping the overburdened family learn effective coping skills we can reduce that stress. The end result is higher self esteem – for the child with disabilities, the parent, and the siblings.
All Jeffrey Foundation programs incorporate a high degree of parental involvement, oversight and input, and require a partnership between staff and client. The Parent Training Program includes strategies that specifically encourage empowerment and reduced reliance on outside resources. Participants will gain and use new coping skills, have higher levels of self-esteem and will show diminished levels of anxiety. This will decrease the likelihood of depression and will help lower instances of child abuse and/or neglect in Los Angeles County, primarily.
Program design and evaluation are conducted with the participation of the Parent Advisory Board, which discusses and recommends classes, groups and program changes. Families are given an opportunity to provide program evaluation through an annual anonymous survey, a quarterly parent advisory meeting and monthly individual meetings with program staff.
The Parent Training Center will provide a mechanism for special needs and/or at-risk children, parents and family members to acquire the knowledge to break through cultural barriers and attitudes, as well as increase awareness of the needs of special children and their families within each cultural community.
The Parent Child Training Center is located at 5443 West Washington Blvd, Los Angeles 90016.
When a family enters this program, a family plan is developed by an interdisciplinary team including the teacher, social worker, doctor, regional center worker, and parent. This allows us to set goals. Progress towards these goals is tracked on the quarterly level.
We provide training classes, both in the home and at our center, in home making, grooming, diet and nutrition, feeding, specialized child care, and the use of specialized equipment. Counseling is provided in-house, and we provide referrals for other services, such as medical and therapeutic services.
A Special Needs or disabled child can only experience a rich, fulfilling life in a settled family environment. This program aims to reduce abandonment and institutional placement as well as divorce and marital problems and drug and alcohol abuse associated with raising a disabled child. Our training programs help all family members become more understanding and helpful.
The Parent/Child Training Center started in 1999 is currently serving 150 special needs infants and children and their families in a ten mile radius of our center (CIPA’s 2, 3 and 5; SPA 6). With an average family size of five, that means we are serving 750 people already! The Parent Child Training Center will celebrated there Seventh year of service on November 15, 2006.
We will add new clients as caseloads permit and families are rehabilitated or clients move into other services, such as an adult program. For more than five years we have served more than 750 families-or 3,750 people.
The Parent Child Training Center is funded by grants from the City of Los Angeles Community Development Department, and Corporate Foundation Grants. DCFS-Family Preservation Network is collaborating with Westside Children Center funds a Parent Child Counseling Program
